Sylane Hurling Club is delighted to see the return of the very popular Anthony Murphy Cup Tournament after a break of two years due to the Pandemic.

The tournament is held annually in honour of Anthony Murphy.

Anthony who came from Caherhugh in Belclare was a very talented young hurler who played at under 14 level for the club from 1984 until his untimely passing in 1986.

The Murphy family donated a cup to the club in his honour and it was decided to arrange a tournament for the National Schools associated with the club to compete against each other.

Local National Schools that are involved in the tournament:

+ Ballinderry NS + Belclare NS + Castlehackett NS

+ Cummer NS + Donaghpatrick NS + Kilbannon NS

+ Kilcoona NS + Kilconly NS + Knockroon NS + Sylane NS

It was fitting that Belclare NS, where Anthony attended, won the inaugural cup in 1987.

The Anthony Murphy Cup has harvested the skills of many young hurlers at National School level over the years and has been instrumental in the success of the clubs underage teams in achieving county titles at different age levels.

Many of these players have gone on to achieve great success and some players have gone on to proudly represent the club at county level.

Kevin Brady played minor hurling for Galway at the age of 16 and won All Ireland medals in 1999 & 2000.

Keelan Creaven also won an All Ireland Minor medal in 2018.

We remember how important the Anthony Murphy Cup is for the club and for the role it has played in developing young players since the first tournament in 1987.

We remember Anthony in our thoughts and prayers and thank the Murphy family for the contribution that they have made for the youth and success of the club.
